Triage before recovery attempts
A failing drive can deteriorate with every power cycle. Clicking, repeated recalibration, intermittent detection, controller faults, liquid exposure and unstable read speeds require different handling from accidental deletion or a damaged file system. GDF records the symptoms and source condition first, then selects a recovery path that protects the remaining forensic options.
Routine repair utilities write to the source and can replace the metadata needed to understand what happened. Recovery work therefore begins from a verified image whenever the media can be acquired. Analysis, reconstruction and file carving proceed on working copies rather than the original device.
Failed drives, flash media and storage arrays
Logical damage may be addressed through partition, file-system and database reconstruction. Unstable media may require controlled imaging with read retries, timeouts and a map of sectors that could not be recovered. SSDs and flash devices may require controller-specific handling because logical addresses are translated internally and deleted blocks may already have been reclaimed.

When specialist hardware work is required
Some mechanical and electronic failures require a specialist recovery laboratory, controlled environment, donor components or device-specific electronics work. The engagement record should identify who handled the source, what was changed and which stage produced each image. GDF coordinates forensic preservation and later analysis while keeping that specialist boundary visible.
Validation and usable delivery
A recovered filename is not enough. Files are checked for readability, internal consistency and available metadata. Directory structure, timestamps and application relationships are preserved when the source supports them. Unrecoverable areas and partially reconstructed items remain in the exception record rather than disappearing from the report.
The final delivery distinguishes source acquisition from recovered content and later interpretation. It can include verified images, a recovered-file inventory, exception logs, timelines and a technical report suitable for business, insurance or legal review.
