Los Angeles Computer and Hard Drive Forensics
Reconstruct the activity behind disputed business files. Connect workstations, storage and account records before drawing conclusions about access or transfer.
The engagement
What the Computer and Hard Drive Forensics engagement covers
A project can move between an LA office, an editing suite and an outside contractor without leaving a complete history in any single folder. The question may concern an employee departure, a disputed delivery or access to confidential work. GDF scopes the examination around that question and the systems capable of answering it.
A forensic acquisition and a file copy serve different purposes. An acquisition may preserve system artifacts needed to examine activity; a selected copy may preserve only the files requested. The appropriate approach depends on authorization, device state, encryption, operational needs and the evidence sought. We document the chosen method and its limitations.
Computer forensics is not simply deleted-file recovery. A useful examination can compare surviving files, application records, removable-device activity and available cloud logs. Conversely, a recovered document may establish its contents without identifying who created or transferred it. Findings should distinguish those conclusions.
Scope
Workstation and drive acquisition
Identify relevant laptops, desktops, external drives and authorized account access. Record custody, device identifiers and acquisition conditions.
File and activity reconstruction
Examine available file-system and application artifacts against the specified dates. Compare local events with independently retained records where available.
Business-ready findings
Explain the relevant artifacts, competing interpretations and missing evidence. Keep collection completeness separate from confidence in an individual observation.
Evidence commonly reviewed
Evidence reviewed
- Native project files, versions and accessible storage media.
- Application records and relevant operating-system artifacts.
- Authorized sharing, identity and transfer logs that can corroborate device activity.
What you receive
Deliverables
- An acquisition and custody record identifying the examined material.
- A source-referenced activity timeline with time-zone treatment.
- A findings report separating observations, interpretation and unresolved questions.
Preserve the workstation before a handover or rebuild
When an employee or contractor leaves a project, equipment reuse can compete with preservation. Identify the device custodian and upcoming reset, reissue or return dates. Coordinate the preservation decision before routine maintenance changes the available evidence. Do not run recovery software on the original drive or assume a backup contains every system artifact.
For production workstations, document connected storage and application dependencies. A project file may reference material on another volume, while the final deliverable contains no revision history. Decide whether the examination concerns the project, the exported result or both. This avoids collecting large media volumes that do not answer the disputed question while overlooking a small but relevant log.
Hashes help identify acquired data and subsequent copies. They do not prove completeness, authorship or the truth of a document. SSD behavior, encryption and overwritten data can limit recovery. The examiner records those constraints and identifies other sources that may answer the question, such as a separately retained repository or recipient copy.
Frequently asked
Questions about Los Angeles Computer and Hard Drive Forensics
Can a hard drive prove that someone copied a file?
Sometimes artifacts support a transfer, but the conclusion depends on the available records. File presence alone is not proof of a particular copying event or person.
Should IT reinstall the operating system first?
Discuss preservation before a rebuild or reset. Those actions can change or remove relevant artifacts. Coordinate operational needs with the authorized preservation scope.
Is this different from expert testimony?
Yes. An examination produces technical findings. Formal opinion work and testimony are separately scoped through the LA expert-witness service.
